Tungurahua, from Quichua tunguri (throat), rahua (fire): “Throat of Fire”, also known as the “The Black Giant” is an active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador rising 5023 meters above sea level. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Ecuador. It rises above the small thermal springs town of Baños de Agua Santa (1,800 m) which is located at its foot 8 km to the north and is located about 140 km south of the capital city of Quito.
