The Cape Horn Lighthouse sits on a rocky headland at the south end on Hornos Island, in southern Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago. It’s surrounded by wild seas off the southern tip of South America where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. A Chilean family resides year-round on the island manning the lighthouse. (For most of the year, this family has to endure severe weather and their only supplies come from passing cruise ships, making everyday rations and amenities few and far between.) Uniquely wooden walkways crisscross Hornos Island’s treeless headland protecting the fragile peat-bog ecosystem – so please don’t wander off the walkways and leave this amazing island just as you found it.
