Perched on rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Cape Kidnappers is home to one of the world’s largest and most accessible mainland gannet colonies. The colony offers an unrivaled opportunity to photograph these magnificent seabirds up close in their natural environment. With their striking black eye markings and golden crowns, the gannets make for captivating subjects. During nesting season, you can capture compelling shots of the birds’ elaborate courtship rituals, nest-building activities, and the tender moments of raising their young. The ocean backdrop adds a dramatic element to your compositions, while the cliff-top vantage points offer a variety of angles for your shots. Best visited between November and April, a visit to the colony often involves a tractor ride or hike, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Remember to keep a respectful distance from the nesting areas to minimize disturbance to these marvelous birds.
