The Emancipation and Freedom Monument, a public statue located on Brown’s Island in Richmond, Virginia, was unveiled on September 22, 2021. Designed by Oregon sculptor Thomas Jay Warren, the monument features two 12-foot bronze statues of an emancipated man and woman holding an infant. The woman is depicted holding a paper with the date January 1, 1863, corresponding with the day President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The monument is the first state-funded statue in the US that celebrates emancipation and was commissioned by Virginia senator Jennifer McClellan. Richmond, the capital city of Virginia, is home to this historic monument and has a rich cultural and political history. (Richmond, Virginia, USA)
