Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey is a lighthouse located on the tip of Sandy Hook. It was built in 1764 as an aid to navigation. Constructed in 1764 by order of George III for use as a navigational aid before the American Revolutionary War. It is the oldest lighthouse in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse is on the grounds of Fort Hancock. Originally called New York Lighthouse, it was funded by taxes on ships entering the city port and a New York Assembly lottery. During the revolutionary war, the glass and other elements were destroyed but repaired by the British shortly after. Sandy Hook Lighthouse was restored in 2000 and maintained by the National Park Service. Tours are available daily for this remarkable piece of American History. (Highlands, New Jersey, USA)
