Lake Powell is located in Utah and Arizona and is part of the Navajo Nation. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in North America and is notable for its photogenic rock formations. The lake was formed when Glen Canyon Dam was constructed in 1963. In 1963, the U.S. Congress authorized the building of the Glen Canyon Dam as part of the Central Arizona Project (CAP). The dam would divert water from the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and then into Lake Powell. The CAP project included the creation of Lake Mead, which lies upstream of Lake Powell. The diversion of water from the Colorado River resulted in the flooding of large areas of land along the river. Lake Powell now has a surface area of approximately 2,100 square miles. The lake is popular with boaters, swimmers, fishermen, and photographers. There are also several resorts along its shores.
