The Garreg Ddu dam in the lower Elan Valley is a low, completely submerged dam which maintains a constant supply of water to Birmingham by holding water back on the upstream side. This unique dam is topped by an intricate stone arched bridge that changes depending on the surrounding water levels – some times the arches almost completely disappear in the water. The dam is surrounded by lush greenery, making the area even more photogenic. (Rhayader, Wales)
