Glas-allt-Shiel is a lodge that was built in 1868 by Queen Victoria, who called it Glassalt, to be what she called her “widow’s house” where she could escape from the world following the death of her husband Albert. The lodge is still owned by the Royal family, although it is rarely used and is easily accessible along the hike circling Loch Muick. An outhouse at the back of the lodge is an open bothy maintained by Mountain Bothies Association. When royal parties are visiting the lodge backpackers are still allowed to stay in the bothy but they are asked to keep discreetly out of the way. (Loch Muick, Scotland)
