The original Royal observatory in England, Designed by Christopher Wren, the building was erected in 1676 by the decree of King Charles II. From this building, early astronomers made observations of heavenly bodies in a large octagonal room outfitted for that purpose. This aided navigation for ships at sea and helped the British Navy dominate the era. This is also the site where Greenwich mean time is measured from.
