One of the most beautiful bridges in Italy is the historic Ponte degli Alpini with its intricate woodwork. It was built over the river Brenta in 1209, and destroyed a number of times in the following three centuries – by the floods 1409 & 1567 and by the French troops, who set it on fire in 1511. It was redesigned and rebuilt it in 1569 with five wooden spans and four hydrodynamic pylons. Since then, nobody has dared alter the magnificent structure, in all the times it has been rebuilt over and over again — after another flood in 1748, a fire in 1813, and sabotage so it would collapse in 1945. Despite its colourful history the Ponte Degli Alpini still stands strong today. (Bassano del Grappa, Province of Vicenza, Italy)
