Castello del Boccale is one of several historic fortifications and watchtowers dotted along the coast road south of Livorno. These defense structures once protected the region from pirates. As you drive along the oceanfront, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the blue Mediterranean waters, pink rocks and cliffs covered in vegetation. Upon arrival, admire the rectangular castle with its two rows of windows and three round tower. The castle was originally built as a watchtower for the powerful Medici family in the 16th century, but was transformed into a neo-medieval residence at the end of the 19th century. Make your way over to the rocky outcrops just to the south where you can get the best views of the scenic castle and its Mediterranean backdrop. (Calafuria, Province of Livorno, Italy)
