Grafarkirkja - Photo by Yves Alarie
Grafarkirkja is a unique turf church that was originally 17th century. It is not only the oldest Christian church in Iceland, but it is also one of the very few to feature any sort of ornamentation. The church was actually deconsecrated not long after its construction and for years it was used as a tool shed. Despite this, the ancient turf oratory survived remarkably well across the centuries but eventually the National Museum of Iceland had the structure entirely rebuilt to its original condition in 1950.
