Breiðamerkurjökull is a glacial tongue that flows down the mountains from Vatnajökull. It is responsible for the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Diamond Beach, and crystal ice caves. The name ‘Crystal Cave’ comes from the transparent white and blue ice interior. Ice caves’ brilliant blue colours result from snow’s compression into ice. The weight of the ice presses out the oxygen. The Crystal Ice Cave has crystal-clear walls because the glacier is so old that it’s had plenty of time to squeeze out all the oxygen. Ice and water naturally filter light, so the walls can look aqua and green when the sun is intense in winter. The ice cave is only accessible with an experienced guide as part of a tour group.
