The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa with rich turquoise waters contrasted against the dark black volcanic rock. The water has also created a white muddy bottom from the silica content in the water, which only deepens the blue colours of the water. The lagoon is artificial and results from runoff from a nearby power station where the lava superheats the water to run wind turbines that generate electricity. The lagoon has become popular as a folk medicine location for various ailments, including psoriasis, and has become popular with visitors. The Blue Lagoon is frequently full of bathing tourists and guests; however, it is large enough that you can capture images without bathers at the right angles. Also, the steam rising from the water can obscure bathers if you want to avoid shooting them. The spa opens at 9 am, and we recommend contacting them in advance before bringing professional camera gear on site. Their website is: http://www.bluelagoon.com/ (Norðurljósavegur, Iceland)
