Burg Eltz Castle | Germany Photo Spot

Burg Eltz is a medieval castle that looks like it came right out of the pages of a fairy tale, perched on a rock spur by the Elzbach River, wrapped on all sides by the verdant Eltz Forest. Incredibly it is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago.

Burg Eltz may be the most fantastic castle we’ve ever seen. Neuschwanstein castle gets all the fairy tale glory, but Castle Eltz is frankly more interesting. Tucked deep in the dark German forest, this beautiful fortress is less known. But honestly, it is the most beautiful castle in Germany.

History of Burg Eltz

Built in the 12th century, this castle has been owned by the Eltz family for over 850 years. Surrounded on three sides by the Elzbach river, construction began in 1157 and continued for over 500 years. Unbelievably it houses over 100 guest rooms, eight towers reaching up to 131 ft (40 metres) in height, and unusual architectural details too numerous to mention.

Photographing Burg Eltz

Sadly the castle is not open in the winter and usually reopens in April. However, the hours can be sporadic, so check the website (https://burg-eltz.de/) before you go. As with any popular tourist destination arriving earlier is better. Expect to find a few fellow photographers at these times of the day. Recommend visiting before 11 am or after 3 pm. As the castle is northwest-facing, oblique lighting will also be better at these times of the day.  The nearest town is Wierschem, and the castle Eltz is a short drive down the aptly named Burg Eltz St. Parking is available at a reasonable 2-4€, and a short hike will take you to the castle.

No Drones

Sadly drone photography/videography is not permitted, but there are plenty of beautiful angles and shooting locations on the path to the castle and the “Eltz Castle Panorama” route. The latter is a 12.6km hike, so wear appropriate footwear if you take advantage of this beautiful hike through the woods.

Guided Tours

To access the castle’s interior, you must take a guided tour. Tours are 10€  and available in various languages, beginning every 10-15 minutes. Tours take approx 35-40 minutes. The friendly guides take you to some of the castle’s most impressive rooms, including the armoury, various halls and the jaw-dropping study. Sadly photos are not allowed inside the castle itself, but the tour is well worth it.
