Burg Baldenau is a ruined castle beautifully situated in the Dhron valley, and are one of the only moated castles in the Hunsrück. The castle dates back to the early 1300s and has had many uses over the years ranging from a fortification to hunting lodge and even an electoral office. It was permanently destroyed in 1689 during the Palatinate War of Succession by French troops under Louis XIV and was essentially abandoned. (Morbach, Germany)
