Place Vendôme was built in 1686 by order of the French King Louis XIV. Over the decades the most prestigious French haute couture brands and the finest jewellery houses have moved in to take over the shops of the square. The centrepiece of the square is the imposing Colonne Vendôme – a bronze column standing as a war memorial, with intricate carvings topped by a statue of Napoleon. (Paris, France)
