Fort D’Ambleteuse is a historic sea fort that was built at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV to defend the port in the estuary of the Slack. Over the years it has had quite the colourful history as the fort changed hand numerous times ending up being used by the Germans in WWII. After the war it was abandoned, and vandalized, before it was finally classified as a historic monument in 1965. At high tide the Fort is surrounded by the sea, and on stormy days it is literally besieged and attacked by powerful waves which explode on its sides in impressive sprays of foam. (Ambleteuse, France)
