Barrage de la Gileppe - Photo by Benjamin Photographe

Barrage de la Gileppe (Gileppe Dam) is an arch-gravity dam on the Gileppe River that was was built in the 1870s to supply water for the wool industry in nearby Verviers. The Gileppe dam complex has two emblematic figures: “the panoramic tower” and the famous “Lion”. Almost 78 meters high and fully glazed at its top, the panoramic tower offers an unforgettable view of the site and the surrounding region. The famous lion, 13.5 meters high, is the work of the sculptor Félix-Antoine Bouré who took a year to cut the 183 sandstone blocks necessary for its construction. (Jalhay, Belgium)
