Often referred to as Gunkanjima (meaning Battleship Island), Hashima Island is an abandoned island lying about 15 kilometers from the city of Nagasaki in southern Japan. Its unique silhouette and dilapidated concrete buildings, which provided housing for workers in what was once a flourishing coal mining facility, are a stark contrast to the surrounding sea. Closed down in 1974, the island has been abandoned for decades and was reopened to the public in 2009. It is now a hauntingly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site. The crumbling apartments, empty streets, and encroaching nature provide a rich and dramatic setting for photographers. The island’s eerie ambiance and decaying architecture have also served as inspiration for numerous films, including being featured as a villain’s lair in a James Bond movie.
